Here is her statement about the piece that will be shown:
Asya Reznikov’s work explores how culture, tradition, language and sense of home shape and define our identity and how immigration, emigration and travel alter or illuminate that identity. Being raised within two cultures informs her investigation of otherness and self from the standpoint of a foreigner and of a traveler. Her processes include video, sculpture, performance, installation, photography, drawing and painting.
In her video, Mapping: 23 Minutes, 23 Tongues, Reznikov writes the names of the continents in 23 different languages, one language atop another, until the accumulation of the names forms a world map. The video is excerpted from a 23 minute loop and was created in 2004. This work has been presented at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA; the Galerie der BASF in Schwarzheide, Germany; the Nancy Hoffman Gallery, New York, NY; the Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as well as projected onto skyscrapers in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, South Korea.
